NSFA, Panacan, Davao City – An encounter between the troops of 3rd Infantry Battalion and New Peoples Army ensued along the boundary of Brgy Lacson and Brgy Lamanan both of Calinan Dist., Davao City at about 4 PM on February 16, 2017.
The encounter came after the NPAs landmines a convoy of troops who are pursuing armed men who burned one pineapple harvester owned by Del Monte in Brgy Tawantawan, Calinan District, Davao City noon of Feb 16, 2017.
15 soldiers were wounded and two other soldiers were killed (names are being withheld pending the notification of their family) as a result of landmine explosion while two NPAs were killed after the firefight ensued.
Likewise, troops were able to recover two firearms (cal. 45 & Garand rifle), two IEDs and landmine making paraphernalia.
Earlier at about 5 AM Binaton CAA Detachment, in Sitio Binaton, Brgy Malabog, Paquibato District, Davao City was harassed by undetermined numbers of NPA, as a result, one NPA was killed during the incident.
Meanwhile, BGen Gilbert I. Gapay, Commander of JTF Haribon which has the operational jurisdiction over Davao City expressed grief for the death of the soldiers and vowed to pursue the NPAs
“We grieved for the death of our soldiers, and we salute them for their display of the finest tradition of soldiery, we see to it that their death will not be in vain, this will further motivate us to work for peace in this part of the country. Since last night we are on clearing operations to clear the areas of other possible IEDs that might endanger the people and community therein and other possible NPA casualty left. Likewise, pursuit operations against these armed lawless group are being undertaken and we will continue to run after them to protect our communities, will not allow them to further carry out their terroristic act” BGen Gapay said.
Troops under Joint Task Force Haribon are now undertaking pursuit operations as of this report.
