ASEAN DENGUE DAY  |  DOH advocates 4S Strategy against Dengue

MANILA (DWDD) – The Department of Health (DOH) commemorated in Puerto Princesa, Palawan the 8th year of the ASEAN Dengue Day with the theme “Kung Walang Lamok, Walang Dengue: Mag 4S Kontra Dengue”. The theme aims to give emphasis on vector control as a strategy to prevent and control dengue.

Since its declaration on 22 July 2010 during the ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting in Singapore, different regions rotate as host for the local ASEAN Dengue Day celebration.

From 1 January to 26 May 2018, dengue cases nationwide now reach 37,959. There were 195 deaths recorded. This is 7% lower compared to last year’s 40,993 cases for the same period.

Most affected group belong to the 10-14 years old with males comprising 52% of all cases.

The areas with highest number of cases are National Capital Region (6,493 cases); CALABARZON (6,296); Central Luzon (5,997); Northern Mindanao (2,540); Western Visayas (2,314) and Central Visayas (2,241).

“Our goal to prevent dengue starts within ourselves by maintaining cleanliness in our surroundings by emptying containers of stagnant waters to eliminate breeding places of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes, Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III said, adding that the DOH’s 4S Kontra Dengue is an effective strategy to prevent cases and deaths.

These 4’S strategy consists of: Search and destroy mosquito breeding places, Secure self-protection, Seek early consultation and Support fogging/ spraying only in hotspot areas where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.

To scale up this year’s event, there are different activities for targeted individuals such as Scientific Forum for Dengue Program Implementation, Poster Making Contest for School Children and ASEAN Dengue Walk for the Search and Destroy Mosquito Breeding Places Activities for Communities.

Another highlight of the event is the visit to the Insectary to feature Palawan’s current efforts in entomological research and hospital-visit to check ongoing initiatives on dengue as well as Dengue/Dengvaxia fast lanes.

“Dengue is everyone’s concern. I call on all Filipinos to make 4S a part of our daily routine in order to achieve the highest level of prevention and control against dengue,” Duque concluded. DOH / MCAG
