MEDAL OF VALOR AWARDEE

MAJOR EGMIDIO CRUZ (03 May 1943 to 28 February 1944)

From 03 May 1943 to 28 February 1944, in the active service of the United States Army, Major Cruz volunteered to perform a secret and hazardous mission from Washington DC, USA to Australia and then to the Philippines to evaluate the behaviour and attitude of Filipino leaders towards the Japanese conquerors. The mission was prompted by President Manuel Quezon’s desire to determine their loyalty to the Allied cause and obtaining information of great importance to the government of the Commonwealth and the Southwest Pacific Command. Major Cruz landed in Negros, secured a blueprint of the Japanese defenses along the San Bernardino Strait, travelled by various means, under different guides to Manila, returned to Australia and then Washington and provided the information needed to successfully conclude his mission.
