On 26 July 1917, then 1Lt Santos requested his commander that he be allowed to lead the platoon assigned to attack Cotta at Bayang on the shores of Lake Lanao to neutralize bands of Moro outlaws.
Among them were all Lanao bandit chiefs. With three companies of Philippine Scouts, 1Lt Santos boldly led his troops in assaulting some 600 fully-armed and well-entrenched outlaws.
Using scaling ladders, the scouts stormed the fort and killed 35 bandits. The soldiers suffered fewer casualties with only one killed and four wounded. 1Lt Santos himself sustained an almost fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head. OACPA / MCAG
