INTERNET GOVERNANCE  |  DICT to hold Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue for the Philippine Internet

CP GARCIA, DIliman, Quezon City (DWDD) – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) joins hands with Internet Society – Philippine Chapter (ISOC – PH) and the Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) in charting the future of Internet Governance in the country.

A number of international organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT), and the GSM Association (GSMA) have already expressed optimistic views on the inaugural discussion, 1st Philippine Internet Governance Colloquium 2017 to be held on 18-19 October, 2017, cognizant of the role of the internet in building economies of scale and scope and enabling participatory democracy among Filipinos.

At 100 million strong, the Philippine populace presents as a market potential for online trade brought about by innovation in various sectors of society.  Envisioned to provide connectivity, DICT’s Free WiFi in Public Places Project or Pipol, Konek! is steadily gaining traction among its initial users, with the completed deployment accounting for around 13,000 sites nationwide. This, in consonance with the National Broadband Plan (NBP), paves the way for high-speed connectivity and targeting growth in the countryside, and figures in well with the National Government Portal (NGP) that serves as a one-stop online shop for public services.

In cyberspace, the convergence of content, network and users constitutes building trust and confidence on the use of various online services. It is then imperative for stakeholders to have a benchmark understanding of the implications of policies governing data applications, secured transactions, and web accessibility

Through this open dialogue, the DICT seeks to build on the experience of the multi-stakeholder process of Internet Governance involving government, businesses, civil society, academe, technical organizations, and other sectors of the digital community, and to harness their energies into bringing the benefits of the digital economy to all citizens.
