The long road to 2017 PBA Philippine Cup championship trophy will become rough as San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra promised to deliver an exciting series starting on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Both teams survived a bruising best-of-seven semifinal series against their opponents resulting to 4-3 score results – the Beermen dumped Talk ‘N Text Katropa while Gin Kings reign over Star Hotshots.
Although Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel Beer have the same corporate roots, both teams prepared and vowed to get the championship.
“Game 1 to Game 7, we’ll be ready. We know they’re not gonna lay down, and we’re not gonna lay down either. It should be fun to watch,” San Miguel guard Chris Ross said.
The Gin Kings echoed the same reaction. One of Ginebra’s senior players Mark Caguioa said they want to prove that they can win the title again.
Meanwhile, Ginebra mentor Tim Cone admitted that the three-time league Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo is their biggest concern.
“I don’t have a plan yet to stop June Mar and I’m not even sure if there’s a plan,” Cone added.
San Miguel coach Leo Australia clarified that they win games not only because of June Mar but also because of his teammates including Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross.
Throughout the pro league history, the Beermen secured 22 championship titles while Barangay Ginebra got nine. -MF
