The Armed Forces of the Philippines sees a silver lining as the Communist Party of the Philippines declared a unilateral ceasefire in Surigao del Norte after the province was hit by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake on Friday, February 10, 2017.
This welcome development came after the AFP’s plea to the rebels not to attack the soldiers who are conducting search and rescue operations on the severely affected areas.
AFP Public Affairs Office Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo said that it is a good sign to once again open the peace talks.
He also added that there are still lots of
good-willed people on the side of the New People’s Army.
The Armed Forces are looking forward to the rebels’ cooperation not only in times of calamity. -EPJA
