CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City– Fresh from the ongoing operations against the NPA terrorists, troops under the 30th Infantry Battalion immediately shifted to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) Operations in areas that were badly hit by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Norte, 10 February 2017.
At around 11 P.M., Ltc Rico Amaro, 30IB Commanding Officer directed his troops to immediately respond and assist the communities within the unit’s area of responsibility that were badly affected by the earthquake.
Troops under alpha company were able to assist the communities in San Francisco, Surigao del Norte. Three (3) severely injured residents were rescued and brought to the Caraga Medical Hospital.
Meanwhile, one person reportedly died after the 3rd floor of one building collapsed in Surigao City. Troops under the charlie company lead the retrieval operation. They were able to retrieve one dead person at around 1 A.M.
As of 2 P.M today, Feb 11, 2017, the Caraga RDRRMC has recorded a total of 6 fatalities and 108 injured. San Nicolas Bridge that connects Surigao City and San Francisco, SDN has collapsed. Surigao Airport is non-operational due to the damages in the runway. There are structures that collapsed and others were severely damaged.
“We assure the Surigaonons that the 30IB will be providing all the necessary assistance that will help the Local Government Units bring back the normal situation in the whole province especially the devastated part of Surigao City.” Said by Ltc Amaro.
“As we conduct our Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Operation in the area, we remain vigilant on the terrorist NPAs that are still causing havoc in the entire region.” He added. As of this report, 30IB personnel are still conducting relief operations in support of the Local Government Units in Surigao.
