BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY | NDRRMC confers Bakas Parangal Awards

balangkas1DWDD – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) holds Bakas Parangal Awarding Ceremony today, at the Department of National Defense Social Hall, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Nineteen (19) awardees, ten (10) groups, and nine (9) individuals were recognized for supervising and coordinating the search, rescue and retrieval operations for the victims of the collapsed Sumag Tunnel Project in General Nakar, Quezon and helicopter crash in Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan in August 2016.

The Sumag Tunnel incident happened on 12 August 2016 where seven construction personnel were trapped in the collapsed Sumag Tunnel Project in General Nakar Quezon. A search, rescue and retrieval operations was set on 16 August 2016 however, the helicopter used to transport the rescuers crashed in the vicinity of Sitio Macau, Barangay Kabayunan, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan. balangkas2

NDRRMC Chairperson and National Defense Secretary Delfin N Lorenzana led the awarding of plaques, certificates and medals to the recipients together with Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Administration Asec Kristoffer James E Purisima and Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Operations Asec Rodolfo Demosthenes C Santillan.

In his message, Secretary Delfin N Lorenzana commended the awardees for their outstanding dedication and selflessness in addressing the emergency situation they have faced.

“Be relentless in reinventing your strategies so that they will remain always responsive to the changing demands of the DRR landscape. Cultivate the unique ingenuity of the Filipino race as you find or develop more means to respond to the emergencies and challenges that may come your way,” said Secretary Lorenzana.balangkas3

Bakas Parangal is a recognition of merit and token of thanksgiving bestowed by the NDRRMC to individuals or groups who have exerted exemplary and extraordinary acts of selflessness in reaching out to those who are in urgent need of assistance in times of calamities and disasters.

The Bakas Parangal Awards has three categories namely, Bakas Parangal ng Kadakilaan, Bakas Parangal ng Kabayanihan and Bakas Parangal ng Kagitingan.

Bakas Parangal ng Kadakilaan is bestowed to units or groups and organizations who participated in the rescue efforts despite the obvious hardships of the situation. Bakas Parangal ng Kabayanihan is granted to the leader of a unit/group who exhibited exemplary acts of heroism beyond the call of duty. Bakas Parangal ng Kagitingan is given to individuals who exhibited extraordinary acts of bravery by extending assistance to those in need in times of disaster beyond the call of duty. balangkas4
