CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City (DWDD) – With only a few days left before the year ends, two improvised explosive devices, believed to be from 81mm mortar ammunition, exploded at the municipal plaza of Barangay Central Poblacion, Hilongos, Leyte on December 28, 2016 at 9 o’clock in the evening during a boxing match in connection with their town fiesta celebration.
In a joint statement from local Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police authorities, 31 persons were injured and were immediately brought to Hilongos District Hospital for treatment.
Elements from 78th Infantry Battalion who were among the audience, assisted the PNP in securing Mayor Alberto Villahermosa and the crime scene area.
Army personnel in Eastern Visayas headed by Brigadier General Raul M Farnacio, Commander, 8ID, PA through his 802nd Brigade Commander Col. Francisco F. Mendoza arrived in the area to assist the PNP in the investigation and possible pursuit operations or counteraction.
During the assessment of the PNP, on October 22, 2016, a certain Raidah Ampaso Sarip, a native of Marawi City who is presently residing in Hindang, Leyte was apprehended during a buy bust operation in Hilongos, Leyte. She was charged with violation of RA 9165. Subject person was very enraged because allegedly, she was a victim of provocation and was not caught during the buy bust operation. The explosion could have been perpetrated by her allies in retaliation against the Hilongos PNP.
As of press time, the local authorities are still thoroughly conducting an investigation to determine the other persons involved in the said bombing incident.8DPAO / MCAG
